One only needs to spend a few days in Placencia to realize that this is truly one of the most amazing destination to visit and call home. Places like Placencia are very hard to find these days. So why all the praise for this place?
Location. Placencia is located in southern Belize at the end of a 16-mile long extremely narrow peninsula that shoots out into the Caribbean Sea. One has the beautiful Caribbean beaches on the east, the peaceful ecologically diverse Placencia Lagoon adjacent to the west, the magnificent Maya Mountains 10 miles to the west and hundreds of tropical islands and the world’s 2nd largest barrier reef just off the coast. The Placencia lagoon is teeming with wildlife, birds, unforgettable scenery and the docile, winsome manatee. Scuba dive where Jacques Cousteau once did in the morning and hike amongst jungle waterfalls in the afternoon. Relax with friends in some of the best restaurants in Belize at night. Make new friends from around the world and have a great time. By “Placencia” we are referring to the entire Placencia peninsula and not just the town of Placencia.
What is there not to do in Placencia is the question. Some of the world’s best diving, sailing and salt-water fly-fishing is available right here! Explore the jungle or cool off under a double waterfall just 45 minutes away at the 121,000-acre Cockscomb Nature Reserve. Cave tubing? Got it just 1.5 hours away. Maya Ruins? Two different ones exist about an hour drive to the south. Want to rent out a private tropical island with nothing but palm trees, spectacular coral reefs and sunshine? We know the perfect spot just 20 minutes away. Victoria’s Peak is the tallest mountain in Belize and offers a spectacular 4-day backpacking trip to the summit and back. Coincidentally they migrate to the reef just off Placencia every April, May and June. The Grand Slam in fly-fishing consists of catching in the same day a Permit, Tarpon and Bonefish. This Holy Grail of fly fisherman is only possible in a few places on this planet and Placencia is one of the best. Ever dreamed of chartering a sailboat with captain and cook and taking the family on a weeklong adventure amongst tranquil Caribbean Islands? Look no further. Placencia offers some of the best restaurants in Belize. Visitors are always amazed at the quality and diversity of the food here. Several of our establishments have won the prestigious Best Restaurant of the Year by the Belize Tourism Board. The Maya Beach Bistro rightfully won the honor in 2011. We have an Austrian restaurant run by authentic Austrians, a Korean restaurant spearheaded by Koreans, an Italian restaurant operated by an Italian and lets not forget a Gelato ice cream establishment founded by authentic Italian Gelatoteurs. But there is more. Placencia also offers you some exceptional dive and snorkel operators. Some of the countries best hotels and resorts are located here. Robert’s Grove was voted Hotel of the Year in 2008 by the Belize Tourism Board. Francis Ford Coppola’s Turtle In Resort is located in Placencia. An exceptional art gallery and even one of Belize’s most famous artist (Lola) have shops in the area. Everything, yet not too much, is available right here on the Placencia peninsula. We have the amenities that we all appreciate yet are not overrun by the tourist shops. Placencia continues to keep its charm.
The people of Placencia are extremely genuine, friendly, happy and passionate about where they live. The people are one of the strongest attractions of Placencia. Locals, tourists, foreign home owners and business owners all interact in a very harmonious manner not experienced in many other places. The crime rate in Placencia is some of the lowest in the entire country and one will feel very safe and secure here. We all get along. How wonderful!
How else to describe Placencia but “Barefoot Perfect.” Placencia offers a great charismatic environment that is to be enjoyed by all who are fortunate enough to visit. The sense of relaxation, happiness and well-being flows from all corners. Fortunately Placencia has done an excellent job in maintaining its charisma while at the same time developing in a way so to add much needed amenities, jobs and opportunities for the local as well as the visitor. Even though several major development and infrastructure projects are underway (new Public pier, public Sewer project, international airport, etc) we see Placencia as being able to maintain its charm and not turning into another Cancun. Building height restrictions, a very active pro-sustainable development community and a limited supply of real estate are just some of the forces in our favor.
Placencia Real Estate Opportunities
The real estate market in Placencia continues to gain significant attention. The peninsula is only 16 miles long and with a width varying from 100 feet to ¼ mile wide the supply of land is very limited and certainly defined. The supply and demand model alone projects a steady increase in pricing and value. The current construction of several large marinas and the new international airport just 5 minutes off the peninsula will certainly attract more interest in property here. The governmental Belize and numerous private local and foreign investors continue to pump money into the development of Placencia peninsula. The just completed paving of the 23 mile Placencia road was a $US 12 million undertaking and the fully funded $US 10 million project to provide an environmentally friendly pubic sewer system are just a few examples of the support Placencia is receiving. Placencia is destined to become a true global destination of choice for travelers as well as 2nd homeowners and full-time retirees. Now is an ideal time to purchase property here. A vacant beach lot, a ocean front condo, a stunning beachfront family home, a lagoon home, an existing business and larger tracts of land for development are all available here. Many owners of property paid cash and are not desperate to sell so prices have actually held up very well during the recent global recession along the Placencia Peninsula. Some prices, however, have dropped 15 % from the peak. Availability and good value are the best ways to describe the current real estate opportunities, which are sure not to last long. Come visit and see why Placencia is the place to be.
